Hard to see how you would know they were daydreaming when the dramtic thing happens though. Maybe the task could get blander and blander, and the dramatic thing could happen when the maindriving task is at its blandest???Dr Richard Stephenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08791774543767239611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164107010402710474.post-76328947313749779662012-05-21T14:29:29.682+01:002012-05-21T14:29:29.682+01:00I don't know - if you are actively brainstormi...I don't know - if you are actively brainstorming ideas then wouldn't that be "thinking" rather than "day dreaming"? If it was thinkign, then that is a much more active cognitive process and presumably because of that one is much more mindful while doing it and possibly in a better position to switch back to driving if conditions demand it. Intersting idea though.Dr Richard Stephenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08791774543767239611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7164107010402710474.post-25085878612575297942012-05-11T12:37:27.654+01:002012-05-11T12:37:27.654+01:00Creatively daydreaming is another matter entirely ...Creatively daydreaming is another matter entirely where we are brainstorming ideas for an artistic project. We could be a lot more "out of touch" with our environment than with the occasional loss of attention in the daydreaming mentioned above. I often sing while driving, and this sometimes propels me into a daydreaming state of mind, yet I do stay aware of where I'm at, and keep my eyes on the road, fearfully & curiously to see what surprises might show up in this particular trip. The driving conditions tested (driving at 45mph along a straight road with no oncoming traffic) are probably the conditions under which it is least dangerous to daydream. I imagine daydreaming would have a greater detrimental effect if the driver was required to react quickly to some sort of hazard, such as a car pulling out unexpectedly or someone running into the road. Has anyone investigated the effect of daydreaming under those circumstances?Penny Bonnernoreply@blogger.com
